For waterfowl hunters, the recent cold weather has brought in lots of new migrating birds. Hunters have reported corn fields attracting large groups of geese. Wood duck and Mallard numbers are beginging to peak with the colder weather as well.
Early season bow hunters have been harvesting a few whitetails locally. Early October was greeted with very warm temperatures that had the deer moving very little. The past week has been cold and wet, which will have more deer moving and feeding in daylight hours. Bucks will start to show some pre-rut activity soon by laying down scrapes and beating up the trees with rubs. Start using your scents!
Local tributaries have seen the last major pushes of chinooks. Now is the time to start looking for fall steelhead in good numbers. The Saugeen Fall steelhead lifts have begun by the volunteers at the Ontario Steelheaders with some positive results during the first weekend of lifts.
Rain over the past week (13th-16th) have pushed water levels to near flood stage on many local tribs. The Saugeen is unfishable as of yesterday and will likely come back into decent flow rate and clarity by mid week if further rain holds off. The Sauble, Bighead and Beaver also experienced large amounts of run-off and poor condtions. This will mean good numbers of trout have entered the system however, and fishing will be good once the water begins to clear.
Owen Sound Bay has been producing some steelhead for the late season trollers. Captain Tony Degasperis notes that Hotfish Spoons have been taking decent numbers of fish in the upper layers of the water column.
Fall is the time of plenty! Get out and harvest some animals!

Local outdoors news
Salmon fishing in Owen Sound Bay is still reported as good. Lack of rain and flow in the Sydenham River has held the majority of chinooks out in the bay. Anglers trolling Lymans, Anchovies and Hotfish spoons are catching fish. Concentrate closer to the channel and edge of the "hole" as these fish are ready to leave the bay as soon as the river levels rise. Harbor anglers are reporting success as well. Casting Cleo spoons, Williams Wablers and still fishing with spawn are all producing some salmon for the harbor brigade. Concentrate on early morning and evening hours as the salmon are more active in low light.
Early Goose Season is upon us now. Waterfowlers who can find fresh cut crop fields are reporting great hunts. Large flocks of migrating birds have yet to darken the skies from the north, but the huge population of resident birds are flocked up and hitting the traditional waterways and fields providing action for the goose hunters. Early season wraps up soon and goose/duck reopens in local areas the following week.
Shop owner Drew Watson would like to remind everyone that it is NFL football season. Stop into the store for Watty's weekly pro-line picks. For a large timmies coffee, sonny is willing to spill his beans on the winning teams.

Chinook fishing in Owen Sound has been getting better every day. Boats are reporting good catches of fish both in the morning and evening. The returning chinooks seem to be in a healthier condition than years past, with some fish showing up in the 20lb range. This is good news for salmon anglers. Hot lures have been Hotfish spoons, Flashers with Meat, and Lyman plugs. The majority of fish caught have been coming along the west shore of the bay in depths between 60 and 100 feet of water. Pay attention to your trolling speed as this is usually the deciding factor to success. Lymans run the best below 2.4mph. Hotfish spoons are lethal when trolled 2.3mph to 3mph. Flashers and cutbait run the best between 2.5 and 3.5mph based on the rate of spin the actual bait is creating. READ THE PACKAGE INFO that comes with each trolling head...the information is simple on how to tune an anchovey or cutbait to optimal action.
To boat more salmon, try to run a downrigger program that maintains a single type of presentation. If you are using 2 rods/downriggers, then run a spoon on each, or two lymans, or 2 flasher and meat rigs. Each bait has a preffered speed range that is different from the others. Trying to run a Lyman at 3mph with a spoon on the other rod will only cause problems and catch you less fish in the long run...

Local outdoor news
Salmon are showing up in Owen Sound Bay in greater numbers the past week. Hotfish spoons and cut-bait/anchovies behind flashers are the hot set-ups. The west shore of the Bay is producing the best results with anglers targeting water in the 70 to 150 foot range. Pay attention to detail when fishing natural baits. Cut bait and anchovies must be rotating properly in the bait holder heads. Tweaking the heads is a must to adjust the rate of rotation. Vary your leader lengths behind the flasher and let the fish tell you the correct length. Some days, 50 inches between the bait and flasher can be a hot length, while 20-25 inches may be the magic length the next day. If your bait isn't working properly, you won't catch fish. Many anglers never figure out how to run these natural baits properly and therefore, don't catch fish. They work very very well when run properly.!
Hotfish Mag spoons are another great option this time of the year. These premium spoons are designed by local salmon guru Captain Tony Degasperis. His colour selections are created with Lake Huron/G.Bay salmon in mind. These spoons are designed to be run at specific speed ranges. Keep your speed between 2.3 and 3mph and your fishing these metal gems just right.
The Grey-Bruce Bass Club has now completed 6 events. Big weights of fish have been entered in each tournament. 5 fish coming in at 17+lbs are winning these events, testimate to the incredible bass fishing in our local waters. 3 fish over 6lbs have been caught during these events as well....thats a huge bass anywhere in Canada! The winning weight at Issac Lake on July 23rd was a whopping 18.3lbs for 5 fish! Watson's has many of the proven winning baits in stock! If your looking to put your bass fishing skills to test, the club has 3 events remaining in the schedule and you can contact Rod at rod.freiburger@freiburgercommunications.com for more info, or stop in and see club sponsor Drew Watson for more info.

The Chantry Chinook Classic starts up July 23 and runs to Aug 7th. This derby is hosted by the Lake Huron Fishing Club. This popular event takes place on Lake Huron and info can be obtained at www.chantrychinook.com
Huron anglers are reporting decent catches of salmon and lake trout from Kincardine to Sauble Beach. Fish have been reported in depths of 80 to 150 feet of water, suspended 40 to 70 feet down. Spoons seem to be the key fishing Huron, with the local favorites being the HOTFISH in silver blue, green glow, and glow frog pattern.
Fishing in Owen Sound Bay has been spotty, but chinooks are showing up in the bay as the summer wears on. Catches of salmon have been reported along the west shore from Indian River out to Cape Commadore. This is the tradional area where Owen Sound anglers intercept the migrating chinooks before they set-up and stage in Thomson's Hole. Favorite baits for O.S. chinooks are: Hotfish spoons, Lymans, Silver Foxes and cutbait/anchovies behind Hotspot flashers.
Local bass fishing has been HOT. The scorching hot temps have turned the largemouth bite on big time. The Grey Bruce Bass Club held an event locally this week and had some spectacular fish come to the scale. Winning weight was 5 fish for 18.13lb, and two seperate fish over 6lbs were weighted in! Many bass anglers are reporting slow action for smallmouth but excellent largemouth fishing. Get out and experience it now!
