News From the Store

Bass, Salmon and preparing for the upcoming fall hunting season is the name of the game down at Watson's!

Mid summer heat spells have the bass fishing off the charts in local inland lakes and surrounding inshore waters of Lake Huron.  If your in the market for new bass baits, come down and check out the selection on the rack.  Koppers Live Target Lures, SnagProof Frogs, Yum soft plastics, Strike King Tubes, and Wave baits to name a few.  When it comes to matching soft plastic lures with premium bass hooks Watson's stocks the best.  Trokar, Northland, and Owner are the brands tourny anglers depend on to put big bass in the boat, and you can find them in the store now!

New to Watson's is a full line-up of Power Pro fishing line.  This micro filament fused line is similar to braid but smoother and has a smaller diamter.  This line is a favorite among local bass anglers and is a must for fishing heavy cover for largemouth.  The sensitivity of this new line is second to none and it is as tough as nails!  Watson's now carries lb test selections from 10-50.

For salmon anglers, shop owner Drew Watson is happy to announce his stock of fresh cut bait strips and anchovies has arrived.  To fish these baits anglers need bait holder heads, which can also be found at the store.  Hot-Spot Flashers are a great attractor to pair up with these natural baits and you can find a large selection at Watson's.  If your into pulling spoons for offshore salmon and steelhead, you can find Hotfish, Stinger, Silver Fox and NK spoons in stock.  Lymans your favorite summer salmon lure??  Well, just happens to be the largest local selection of Lymans at Watson's Tackle.

Ugly Stik downrigger rods are a hot item the past couple weeks for anglers preparing for the upcoming Salmon Spectacular, and you can pair up these rods with Shimano TR100 and 200 series downrigger reels.  This is a great set-up for chinooks and a mainstay for Owen Sound downrigger fisherman.

For deer hunters, don't forget about the super package from Savage.  The Savage Axis combo is a sweet deal for anyone looking for a great rifle package for an amazing price.  Come down and check out the gun rack and look for this $399.00 deal.

Ladder stands in both 1man and 2man models are on the floor at the shop.  Now is the time to be thinking about prepping and hanging stands in the local deer woods.  While your at it, why not pick up some RackStacker foodplot seed and plant a buffet for the local deer.  Fall planting of Field Edge and Sweet Success blends are a huge attractant food source come late fall, and make targeting a big buck alittle easier.
If you plan on scouting the deer woods, come down and check out Watson's selection of trail/scouting cameras.  Don't forget your Thermacells if your out there.  Bugs are still bad in the woods and these items are the hottest bug repellant system created.......oh ya, they are forsale at Watson's too!

Don't forget to pick up your derby tickets!  The Chantry ends this weekend, and the early bird draw for Salmon Spectacular is coming up soon!

Local outdoor news

Salmon are showing up in Owen Sound Bay in greater numbers the past week.  Hotfish spoons and cut-bait/anchovies behind flashers are the hot set-ups.  The west shore of the Bay is producing the best results with anglers targeting water in the 70 to 150 foot range.  Pay attention to detail when fishing natural baits.  Cut bait and anchovies must be rotating properly in the bait holder heads.  Tweaking the heads is a must to adjust the rate of rotation.  Vary your leader lengths behind the flasher and let the fish tell you the correct length.  Some days, 50 inches between the bait and flasher can be a hot length, while 20-25 inches may be the magic length the next day.  If your bait isn't working properly, you won't catch fish.  Many anglers never figure out how to run these natural baits properly and therefore, don't catch fish.  They work very very well when run properly.!

Hotfish Mag spoons are another great option this time of the year.  These premium spoons are designed by local salmon guru Captain Tony Degasperis.  His colour selections are created with Lake Huron/G.Bay salmon in mind.  These spoons are designed to be run at specific speed ranges.  Keep your speed between 2.3 and 3mph and your fishing these metal gems just right.

The Grey-Bruce Bass Club has now completed 6 events.  Big weights of fish have been entered in each tournament.  5 fish coming in at 17+lbs are winning these events, testimate to the incredible bass fishing in our local waters.  3 fish over 6lbs have been caught during these events as well....thats a huge bass anywhere in Canada!  The winning weight at Issac Lake on July 23rd was a whopping 18.3lbs for 5 fish!  Watson's has many of the proven winning baits in stock!  If your looking to put your bass fishing skills to test, the club has 3 events remaining in the schedule and you can contact Rod at rod.freiburger@freiburgercommunications.com for more info, or stop in and see club sponsor Drew Watson for more info.
