Local Outdoor news

For waterfowl hunters, the recent cold weather has brought in lots of new migrating birds.  Hunters have reported corn fields attracting large groups of geese.  Wood duck and Mallard numbers are beginging to peak with the colder weather as well.

Early season bow hunters have been harvesting a few whitetails locally.  Early October was greeted with very warm temperatures that had the deer moving very little.  The past week has been cold and wet, which will have more deer moving and feeding in daylight hours.  Bucks will start to show some pre-rut activity soon by laying down scrapes and beating up the trees with rubs.  Start using your scents!

Local tributaries have seen the last major pushes of chinooks.  Now is the time to start looking for fall steelhead in good numbers.  The Saugeen Fall steelhead lifts have begun by the volunteers at the Ontario Steelheaders with some positive results during the first weekend of lifts.

Rain over the past week (13th-16th) have pushed water levels to near flood stage on many local tribs.  The Saugeen is unfishable as of yesterday and will likely come back into decent flow rate and clarity by mid week if further rain holds off.  The Sauble, Bighead and Beaver also experienced large amounts of run-off and poor condtions.  This will mean good numbers of trout have entered the system however, and fishing will be good once the water begins to clear.

Owen Sound Bay has been producing some steelhead for the late season trollers.  Captain Tony Degasperis notes that Hotfish Spoons have been taking decent numbers of fish in the upper layers of the water column.

Fall is the time of plenty!  Get out and harvest some animals!
