Outdoor news from Grey/Bruce

Shelly Decunha of Hanover, On was the winner of the recent Fish Kincardine Derby.  Her winning salmon tipped the scales at 18.32lbs.  The overall winner in the trout division was a whopping 18.04lbs caught by Jim Schmidt.  Anglers reported some very good fish during the extent of the derby that wrapped up on May 29th.  There have been reports of very healthy chinooks coming from Huron so far this spring, indicating an outlook of positive things for the salmon fishery.  Anglers are still connecting with good numbers of chinook offfshore in depths of 70 to 100 feet of water, throughout the water column while temperatures are staggered.  Popular ports have been Port Elgin and Kincardine.  Once mid June rolls around, thermoclines will begin to become more stable and concentrate fish in predictable areas and depths.  Hot baits on Huron have been the local HOTFISH spoon in a number of glow patterns, Silver Fox and Northern King Spoons.  These baits all run best at speeds above 2mph.

There have been good reports coming in from Owen Sound Bay as well.  Anglers are targeting whitefish in the "hole" and having fair success.  Also, there are still some salmon being caught over deeper water near the outskirts of the bay.  Anglers are reporting success on Hotfish spoons and Michigan Stinger Spoons.

Local Pike and Walleye fishing has been decent for anglers who have been out to area lakes and rivers.  Reports are coming in from the Saugeen where anglers are catching a few walleye and channel cats around highway 21 bridge.  This is often an overlooked fishery that can provide tons of fun for the whole family.  Channel cats are some of the hardest fighting fish found in the Great Lakes and are eager biters when they enter the lower stretches of rivers along the Lake Huron shoreline.  Target these fish either with slip sinker rigs on bottom or slip floats drifted in the current.  Bait selection ranges from nightcrawlers to chicken livers to cut sucker.  They aren't picky!

Anglers should note that bass season does not open till the end of June, and both largemouth and smallmouth bass are actively spawning right now.  Male bass guarding nests are particularly aggressive and easy to catch.  Targeting these fish out of season is against the law and detrimental to the future of our bass fishery!  Let the spawn in peace and be prepared for the fantastic bass fishing our region offers once the season opens!

If your a bass angler and interested in putting your skills to the test here is your chance...
