Grey/Bruce hunting and fishing news

The time many local anglers have been waiting for is here!  The ice on both Owen Sound and Colpoys Bays is breaking up.  Strong winds and warm temps have pushed the massive sheets of ice out of the bays.  The first small boats with downriggers have begun to ply the waters of Owen Sound, and catches of chinooks are starting appear.  Inner harbor anglers are enjoying the merits of open water as of yesterday, with slip float and lure chucking anglers landing decent numbers of spring salmon, brown trout and steelhead.  NOTE local boat launches are still iced up with shore ice, and the small boats fishing the bay have been launching their car toppers off local beaches, hopefully by the weekend the major launches will be free of ice to allow larger and more craft to fish the bay.  Body baits, slow trolled near bottom (90-140ft) are the ticket to spring chinook success.  Try to keep your speeds below 2.5mph for the best shot at landing these silver salmonids.

Local river conditions range from low and clear on some systems (bighead, pott, sydenham) to high and muddy (Saugeen).  These conditions are changing on a daily basis with rainfall amounts and temperatures, as there is still snow in the headwaters of many rivers.  All of the local systems are producing fish with anglers adjusting their techniques to specific conditions.  The major spawn of steelhead in the upper stretches of local rivers has yet to begin, but the warm temps this week will have fish pushing up on the gravel with sex on their minds.  Anglers should note that this year's spring trout opener takes place on the 4th Saturday of April which falls on the 23rd.  Many small local tribs are closed for the extended spring season and open on May 31st.  Check your regulations to be sure, ignorance is no exuse to be fishing in a sanctuary.  Local rainbow limits are 2 fish for a sport license, 5 salmon, and a combination of 5 salmon and trout.

Turkeys are strutting and breaking up from their winter flocks across the entire region.  Toms are begining to become vocal with many reports of gobbling in morning and evenings from birds in the area.  This year, the spring turkey hunt opens on the 25th of April.  Be sure to check your regulations to follow all rules and legalities that are a part of the hunt.  Also, don't forget to grab your turkey contest ticket and check your bird in at Watson's for a chance to win a prize!
