April 10-18

News From the Store

The new Mossberg shotgun packages are rolling off the shelves with the anticipation of another awesome spring turkey season.  As noted in last weeks blog, Gobblestalker game calls are now in the shop and selling quickly.  These custom calls are a hot iteam this year, producing some incredible, realistic turkey talk.  Turkey hunters can find all they need to help them bag a tom at Watson's.  With the warm temps over the weekend, many local anglers have been stocking up on salmon baits and electronics for the new open water season.  Scotty downrigger packages and Humminbird fishfinders are now in stock and ready to find a home on your boat.  Don't head out on the bay with last years line on your reels!   Now is the time to stop in and get all your boat rods and reels filled with premium mono for the downrigging season.

Fishing and Huting News

For those interested in getting out on Owen Sound Bay to troll for Salmon, now is the time.  The weekend's warm weather has opened up numerous launches including the West Side/Inner Harbour boat ramp.  Anglers have been out on the bay since the middle of last week and the fishing has been good.  Salmon are being caught by boats trolling the channel and in deep water out in the "hole".  Troll slow this time of year with body baits close to bottom to connect with spring chinooks.

Pier anglers are also having good luck in Owen Sound.  Slip floats and salmon eggs seem to be the ticket.  Best catches are coming at sun up and in the evening.  Small salmon, steelhead and brown trout have been the primary catches by harbour anglers the past couple weeks.  All the ice in the inner harbour is now gone, allowing fisherman to access all portions of the wall.

Steelhead have been spotted in the headwaters of many local tribs.  These fish have now begun their spring spawn and will be on the gravel for the next couple weeks.  Remember, steelhead make multiple spawning runs during their lifetime, and will spawn again if released to do so.  Limit your catch this trout opener and do your part to ensure there are fish for future generations.

The Ontario Steelheaders have been carrying out their annual spring fish lifts at Denny's Dam on the Saugeen.  As of April 18th, the Steelheaders had lifted and transfered over 700 mature steelhead to the upper reaches of the Saugeen.  This transfer ensures a good number of spawing fish find pristine tributaries to lay their eggs, a feat that can be difficult on their own; having to pass multiple dams on the main river.  For more info on the Ontario Steelheaders check out http://www.ontariosteelheaders.ca/

The weekend warm spell had the turkeys gobbling all over Grey County.  Lots of reports of smaller flocks with strutting birds out in the fields around the city.  Turkey season is just around the corner, 2 weeks away!

Looking for more info, stop in at Watson's!
