Local Hunting and Fishing news
Well, if your a salmon angler, we have good news for you. Owen Sound Bay anglers are reporting good catches of spring chinooks. Harbor anglers are also experiencing the same results. Heavy winds have kept many of the smaller boats fishing the inner harbor the past week, but that hasn't stopped them from boating good numbers of salmon. With lighter winds, anglers can now downrig the main bay, concentrating their efforts around the "hole". Chinooks love slow trolled body baits this time of year, and the best action comes close to bottom. Anglers targeting the inner harbor and channel area are doing well on body baits and Hotfish spoons, concentrating on mudlines stirred up by the strong winds. All launches are ice free! Anglers should note, the MNR has been enforcing the Ontario Sportfishing regulations in Owen Sound. Salmon limits are 5 fish, and combination of 5 salmon and trout in total, no more than 2 being rainbows/steelhead. Simple regulations are easy to follow, don't break the rules!
Spring trout season opens this weekend for the majority of local Huron/G.bay tributaries. Upper stretches of local rivers should be in great shape for the opener with lots of fresh fish around considering it has been cold as of late. Anglers should pay attention to exceptions in the regulations when fishing the upper reaches of local tribs. Read the MNR regs carefully before venturing out. Also, be aware, local limits are 2 steelhead per day. Don't abuse the resource, as a large number of returning steelhead to most watersheds are wild fish.
Turkey seasons opens April 25th! Warm weather in the forecast should have the birds gobbling hard. Breeding shouldn't be far off if the warm weather is stable. Hunters should be aware of the regs surrounding the hunt, such as the harvest of male birds, legal hunting time, and trespassing on private land. Don't forget to pick up your tag and ticket for the Spring Gobbler Contest at Watson's or Lake Huron Rod and Gun in Underwood. This contest has a whack of attractive prizes, cheap entry and proceeds will be supporting a good cause.
