News from the shop!
Week 4 of the Great Gobbler Contest has come and gone with some new happenings.
This past week was won by female hunter Julie Coon. Julie's tom turkey scored a whopping 72.3125, nearly edging out Terry Brown who is still the overall leader with a bird that scores 72.625. Julie is also now the overall women's leader for the contest...
If you haven't bagged a tom yet, you still have until the end of the month!
Thermacell Bug repellant systems are still hot items at Watson's. These units are slick tricks for keeping yourself bug free in the turkey woods, and Watson's stocks a good selection of units and refill cartridges.
New to the shop are Cobra marine radio's. These are must for any boater without a radio on the water. These units are built strong and made for the abuse of offshore fishing. Stop in and check them out.
Shop master Drew Watson is happy to announce that the new line up of Fenwick fishing rods have arrived. The store now has a stock of graphite ranging from 5ft ultra-light rods to steelhead and salmon sticks. Fenwick is a big name in the fishing rod business and they stand behind their products.
For the salmon anglers, Watson's now has a new shipment of Shark Cannon Balls. These highend downrigger balls have a very strong following. Chrome models in 12lbs are a hard item to find come salmon time and you can now get them in the store!
New to the gun rack is the sporting/field model 512 Goldwing from Stevens. This goregeous over and under style 12 gauge is the perfect entry level shotgun for either a wing shooter or sport shooting at the range. This gun has a sharp looking silver receiver and interchangable chokes for a package price of UNDER $600.oo!!!! Come check one out or view online at...www.savagearms.com/

Local hunting and fishing news!
Turkeys are gobbling hard the past week. As we near the end of May, hens begin to spend more time on the nest, leaving gobblers looking for love during the day. Toms respond well to the call right now if you can find time to be in the woods. Bugs are bad with the recent trend in weather, so grab a thermacell and get hunting! Time is running out if you don't bag a bird this week! Keep your eyes to the forest floor while your out and about. Reports for the tasty MOREL MUSHROOM indicate that this year is a banner for these tasty treats.
Lake Huron salmon fishing is picking up. The Fish Kincardine derby is on right now, and the reports have been good. Fish have been coming from local ports on Huron. Anglers are targeting salmon and trout off planer boards, divers and rigger sets. Concentrate near the surface where the water is warm. Hotfish spoons have been steady producers for offshore anglers in the know. The derby wraps up this weekend, so you still have a chance to put a fish on top of the board...updates can be viewed here....http://www.fishkincardinederby.com/.
Salmon fishing has been decent in both Wiarton and Owen Sound Bay's the past week. Pay attention to temp changes on the surface and work your lures through these breaks accordingly. With warmer temps, fish tend to concentrate in the upper water column, usually not appearing on sonar. Don't let this fool you!
The Grey Bruce Bass Club will once again be hosting a series of bass tournaments throughout Grey and Bruce counties. Tournaments begin in late June and run into the fall. This local club is gaining a popular following among local anglers. For more info check out http://www.gbbass.ca/ or call the shop.

News From the Store
First off, let us take a look at the updates in the Great Gobbler Contest.
Week #3 winner was John Brown. Mr. Brown's gobbler scored 70.625 points. This tom tipped the scales at 23.8lbs, had a 10-15/16th inch beard and sported spurs that measured 1-1/4 in and 1-13/16in. This monster tom was brought into the scales at Lake Huron Rod and Gun.
Quinn Jones now holds the overall smallest bird division with a bearded hen that dropped the needle on the scale at Watson's to 10.12lbs. This hen also sported a beard that measured 7-1/4 inches.
Big seller in the store this past week has been the ThermaCell bug repellent system. As noted in last weeks Blog, this little unit is the talk of the town when it comes to keeping biting insects at bay. Check out the link for more info, or stop into the store to pick one up. http://www.mosquitorepellent.com/
For all you trap shooters out there, Watson's is pleased to announce that shipments of bulk loads have arrived. Stop into the shop to pick up a flat of shells for the unbeatable price of $69.00/per flat. While your at it, check out the selection of sporting shotguns on the rack at the shop!
If your still trying to bag a gobbler (store owner Drew Watson included), take time to check out the selection of turkey calls in the shop. New additions such as GobbleStalker game calls have been a hot item this season, with both diaphragm and pot calls are on display at the store. It is now mid-season in the turkey woods and gobblers will be fired up now that hens will be spending more time on the nest.
MOOSE HUNTERS....do not forget to stop into the shop to get your tags. Deadline for moose tags is May 31st. There have been eager moose hunters stopping in on a daily basis to pick up their tags. Don't put it off, the deadline is near!
With the arrival of walleye and pike season, anglers need to look no further than Watson's to gear up with soft plastics and minnow baits such as; Yo-Zuri, Rapala, and Tiki-Stik.
Hunting and Fishing News
Spring has sprung into full bloom the past week. The turkey woods have really begun to "green" up. With this period in the Spring Turkey season, hens will begin to spend more time on the nest, leaving Toms gobbling for the majority of the day. Expect Toms to be in the company of hens early in the morning, and then traveling in the hopes of finding more receptive hens. This is THE TIME of bag a big strutter. Recent entries into the Gobbler Contest indicate that more mature birds are finding themselves on the recieving end of a load of turkey shot. Toms that have been "henned up" early in the season will now be looking to maintain large numbers of hens throughout the day, when fact is..most will be nesting. This will cause the Toms to be more vocal in their attempts to gobble up hens. Get out in the woods, pack a ThermaCell, and expect big things! Keep an eye out for Fiddleheads and tasty Morel Mushrooms....tis the season!
For sport shooters we have good news. The SSA ranges and the North Grey Club are now open. Spring temps have been wonderful the past week and it never hurts to shoot often!
Walleye and Pike season is now upon us in our local management areas. Nearly all of the inland lakes north of Owen Sound support healthy populations of pike, and some even have overlooked walleye fisheries. Pay attention to the slot-sizes and regs for these species. Early season walleyes are suckers for classic jig and twister combos, trolled minnow baits, and worm harnesses. Pike fishing can be spectacular this time of year when consecutive warm days bring water temps up above 60F. Top-water pike action can be hot on peninsula lakes north of Wiarton. This is the time of year that the majority of both Largemouth and Smallmouth bass will begin spawing. NOTE...these fish are protected by a closed season till late June and targeting these spawning fish is harmful to the fishery. Avoid areas where you are connecting with bass, move on and let them nest. It is against the law to target out of season species, even if you plan to release them!
Salmon fishing in Owen Sound Bay has begun to die off. As normal, the chinook seem to fill the bay after ice-out then begin to taper off as water temps warm. Many anglers believe the fish totally leave the bay. Many do head out of the bay, but wise anglers who pay attention to trends in water temperature can still connect with fish. As the bay warms, temps on the surface begin to stabilize and active salmon begin to stagger throughout the water column, often feeding in the warm surface water. Pull out the planner boards and dipsy divers...these come into their prime in the later part of May and June. Also, anglers pulling spoons (NK, Hotfish, Silver Fox) begin to take more fish as the water warms and trolling speed increases from the dead slow approach of early spring.
In local news...Watson's Tackle and the Community of Owen Sound would like to Congratulate the Owen Sound Attack of the Ontario Hockey League who captured the OHL title in overtime of game 7 in their series against the Mississauga St. Mike's Majors yesterday. This is the first for the OHL club, and they will be in action at the Memorial Cup this coming week as the OHL Champs! Nice work!

News from the store
Well well...week two of the Ontario Spring Turkey Season has come and gone. The Gobbler Contest is turning out to be a huge success. Terry Brown stilll holds the overall big gobbler that he killed during week #1 which scored 72.625 points. Week #2 winner is Doug Elder with an impressive tom that scored 71.10.
As of yesterday there is new overall non-typical turkey leader! Female hunter Tamara Hogarth dropped a monster tom with 3 beards that scores 83.375. This big non-typical gobbler IS NOT THE OVERALL WOMEN'S LEADER, as the overall score for the ladies catagory must be a typical bird. Tickets are still available for this contest at Watson's and Lake Huron Rod and Gun in Underwood.
If your still working on baggin' a turkey, Watson's has the gear you need to get the job done. New shipments of turkey loads have arrived. We carry shells from 2-3/4 to 3-1/2 to accomodate whatever gun your shooting. Lets not forget the excellent selection of shotguns in the gun rack down at the store. Watson's stocks the latest turkey cannons from Mossberg to Benelli, premium firearms that get the job done. Also, Watson's still has an excellent selection of turkey calls from Gobblestalker, Primos, HS Strut and Quaker Boy. Lots of good reports back on the Squealing Hen call from HS Strut, which can be found on the shelf down at the store!
Now that the weather has warmed up, the bugs are out! Hunters are reporting lots of blackflies this week and the emergence of mosquitoes! Nothing makes a hunt less enjoyable than having to sit still in the turkey woods while you become a buffet for biting bugs. Leave the bug dope at home and pick up a ThermaCELL repellant system. These devices are the greatest bug bite prevention we have found. If you have yet to hear about a ThermaCELL take a look at the website or stop into Wastson's to check them out. They are affordable and effective, and best of all, you can leave the DEET products at home. No smell, no sticky mess on your clothes, and it doesn't destroy your raingear like conventional bug dope. We have been selling these systems for a couple seasons now, and the feedback is overwhelmingly positive. http://www.mosquitorepellent.com/
When it comes to premium footware for the hunter, Watson's is proud to say we stock the best. Come down to the shop to check out the excellent prices on Muck Boots and Irish Setter hikers/rubbers from Red Wing Shoe Company. Any good turkey hunter knows that good footware goes a long way in the woods, and these two manufactures produce products that are designed for the outdoorsman.
Now is the time to get your boat in tip-top shape for the downrigging season is you haven't already. No matter what you need, from downriggers to electronics, Watson's has the equipment to have your boat offshore ready.

Turkeys turkeys turkeys! May is now in full swing with warmer temps here to stay (we hope)! There have been lots of turkeys on the recieving end of a shotgun blast as of late. The Gobbler Contest entry sheets can attest for the excellent turkey hunting the Grey/Bruce region produces. Warm weather has the breeding in full swing. It is now only a matter of time till the hens begin to sit longer on the nests and allow hunters a chance to bag a tom who is without his harem! Many hunters are reporting henned up toms, but this will change soon. Warm weather has brought the bugs out, so make sure your prepare for biting insects (see ThermaCELL above!). The leaves are starting to pop out on the trees now. This will allow hunters to close the distance to gobbling toms without being spotted so easily. Don't forget, the same leaf cover will muffle gobbles, giving the false impression that birds are far away...take note.
Local fishing has toned down abit in Owen Sound Bay. Salmon anglers are still reporting decent catches in the deeper portions of Owen Sound during optimum feeding windows of sun up and sun down. Colpoy's Bay in Wiarton is reporting good catches of salmon this past week. Anglers should target this bay the same they would Owen Sound, concentrating on deep water mornings and evenings.
The Saugeen is still fishing well for steelhead, with reports of some fresh fish in the stretches below Denny's Dam. The Ontario Steelheaders held their annual trout derby at the trailer park below Denny's this past weekend. The turnout was outstanding, with good fishing, and a great meet and greet/dinner at the Rod Jones Pavillion. If you missed out this year, be sure to put it on your bucket list for next season. While on the topic, tickets for the Rod and Reel raffle (Islander + NorthFork float rod) are available at the store.
http://www.ontariosteelheaders.ca/
Most other tribs in the area have now seen the end of the spring steelhead spawn. Most fish intercepted by anglers in these systems will be steelhead dropping back down to the lake. Fishing for these tired trout can be pretty productive, as they are aggresive and back on the feed. However, these fish are not prime for the table, and catch and release is the way to go!

Hunting and Fishing News
As noted above, spring turkey season is now underway. Local hunters have been reporting excellent success rates despite the poor weather conditions during opening week. Heavy winds and rain can hamper gobbling of male birds and therefore making them hard to hunt. That hasn't stopped many local hunters from dropping the hammer on some really nice toms. Cold mornings and rain can leave toms on the roost for longer periods of time in the morning. They might not gobble as frequently off the roost, so take that into consideration when conditions are not perfect. Once the weather starts to warm up, breeding will be in full swing and the majority of hens will be nesting. Take this into account when your in the turkey woods and do not disturb nests if you happen to come across one.
The opening of spring trout season was reported to be a good one this spring. High water, and cool temps have prolonged the spring migration of steelhead into local tributaries. This is a bonus for river walkers since past springs have come early and resulted in the majority of fish having finished spawning and headed back to the lake before rivers opened. Local tribs are still reporting good flows, and decent numbers of steelhead can be found in the upper reaches of many watersheds. Brown and brook trout fishing has been fairly consistent this spring as well, with anglers reporting good catches the past week in local rivers. Anglers should pay attention to local regulations for many tributaries as there are extended spring closures on a few systems. These areas may not open till the end of May, and trout fisherman need to be aware of this. When in doubt, check the MNR reg book for clarification. Here is a direct online link for theOntario regs http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/en/Business/LetsFish/Publication/STEL02_163615.html

Salmon fishing in Owen Sound and Colpoy's Bay has been good. Anglers are reaping the rewards of good numbers of spring Chinook in both bays. Heavy winds have kept many anglers off the water, but a few nice days the past week have allowed large numbers of boats to hit the water. Good catches have been reported by anglers fishing deep in the "hole" and in depths of 40-60 feet of water along the shorelines. Cold temps dictate a slow trolling approach close to bottom this time of year. Body baits rule when temps are cold. As the temps warm up, fish become more aggressive and spread out throughout the water column and spoons begin to take more fish.
