What is new at Watson's this week?
Well, the turkey merchandise is rolling in the door and on the shelves. New HS Strut Squealing Hen calls are now in! Lots of buzz is being generated in the industry with this hot new tool from a leader in game call innovations. This new product comes with an instructional DVD to give hunters in-depth tips on using the new call.
Check out http://www.hunterspec.com/ for an online look at the Squealing Hen.
Also, Pretty Boy decoys are in, a sure fire way to have a gobbling Tom playing catch with a load of turkery shot. As mentioned last Blog, the store gun display is stocked with the lastest shotgun packages from Mossberg and other reliable manufactures, at competetive prices. Watson's also carries a selection of new choke tubes to fit nearly every shotgun on the market, turning your gun into a turkey killer. Spring camo is arriving and new turkey hunting vests are now on display.
Do not forget to stop by the store to grab your ticket for the Gobbler Contest! They are selling fast with the awesome prize packages up for grabs for big turkeys! Ladies, there are tickets for you as well, with a women's catagory in the contest!
Local conditions for anglers and hunters.
Local tributaries have dropped and cleared considerably with the lastest cold snap, with the exception of the Saugeen River, which is still flowing fairly high with large ice banks in the lower end. Anglers have been slow to test the waters, as the conditions on the river banks are dangerous. Expect the next warm spell to boost water flow again, resulting in high muddy conditions with more iceflows. The icejams that created a war-zone in the lower end have undoubtably changed many of the runs and pools. Wade carefully when you visit the river again. It seems to be a late melt for the Saugeen this year, but there are lots of fish to enter the system.
Ice anglers in Owen Sound have been blessed with a late icefishing season. Anglers are taking advantage of the steelhead that have yet to enter local tribs off of the rivermouths and some bonus salmon for guys fishing deep. Remember, sport license limits for steelhead are 2, and are part of the 5 fish combined limit with salmon. The open water downrigging fishery is not far off. A warming trend next week should help, and the ice should be gone within the next two weeks with some wind if all goes well.

To help the turkey hunters out we have just got in a shipment of Mossburg 500 3 barrel combo shotguns. This 3" pump action gun retails for 499.00 and covers waterfowl deer and turkey! Ammunition for turkey hunters is now in stock, along with calls, decoys, light weight camo and a good knowledge of how to bag a bird. Important dates are April 3 turkey seminar in Owen Sound (register with OFAH) April 25 turkey opens. The link to the OFAH seminar page: http://www.ofah.org/hunting/index.cfm?ID=12
Local tributary fishing has been hot during melting periods and tapers off as local rivers clear and drop. Snow pack in the Grey/Bruce region is begining to disappear quickly. The Saugeen River is still at near flood levels with large ice jams in the lower river river begining to break up. Expect big numbers of steelhead to push into the system once the ice clears out. Other local rivers are showing signs of fresh fish but the major migrations of soon to be spawining rainbows has yet to start. Local anglers in the Owen Sound area have been reaping the benefits of a late ice Chinook fishery on the Sound, lets hope these salmon stick around to amuse early season boat anglers in both Owen Sound and Colpoy's Bay. The store is stocked with all the items needed to make your spring downrigging trips a success; from Hotfish spoons, to downriggers, we have it all.
